On Iran…

“The intention is not to go to war. I’ve talked to Ambassador Bolton and Secretary Pompeo. This is not our intention. I think that’s being overblown. The intention is to protect our troops over there, and certainly if our troops are hit by Iranian forces we will respond with full force in retaliation. But let’s hope that doesn’t happen. I think the goal here is to de-escalate the situation and by all accounts it appears that the Iranians now know that they know we know, they got their hand caught in the cookie jar, are starting to back down from this threat. I think a lot of this, Sandra, is caused by the maximum pressure campaign we put on them. The sanctions we’ve levied on them have put them in such a desperate situation now that they’re starting to respond in this fashion.”

On China…

“Let me just say something about Huawei. As a former federal prosecutor, this whole 5G capability that Huawei has are really tentacles of China that are in probably 60% of global markets now, or trying to get in that. Once they get into these markets with 5G technology capability, they own that data. So it’s very much a big national security risk. I think the President made the right decision to basically ban Huawei from putting 5G down into the United States. I would urge any of our allies, particularly our Five Eyes [Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States] not to engage with Huawei because of the national security threat. They have been stealing our intellectual property, espionage cases, text transfers for decades. We finally have somebody who will stand up to them and say no more.”

On Iran…

“This is purely Iranian and its proxy-based threat at this point in time… We’re in a mode of deterrence; we’re not in a mode of aggression; we’re protecting. If our soldiers are attacked, we will respond in full force… I think it’s always important to get inside the head of your enemy, but the fact is that they’re the ones who are being aggressive.”
