Washington D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, applauded yesterday’s decision by the Peace Corps to end its programs in China.

“The Peace Corps’ decision to cut its ties with China is overdue, yet welcome news. Now, they will no longer be following the direction of a Chinese Communist Party entity and their limited resources will be better spent elsewhere. The intent of the Peace Corps is to help developing nations that genuinely need our assistance, not to support wealthy nations, especially a strategic adversary. China is the second largest economy in the world and has spent billions on military equipment with the explicit goal of undermining U.S. security.  Furthermore, their egregious human rights violations continue to mount and the world is waking up to what China truly is. U.S. taxpayer dollars should not be used to bolster Communist China through the Peace Corps, and I’m glad they no longer will.”
