Washington, DC – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement expressing his deep disappointment with the details being reported on the U.S.-German agreement on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

“What President Biden and Chancellor Merkel fail to understand is the Putin regime will use the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as a weapon of coercion against Ukraine and transatlantic energy security as soon as it is operational. Promises to invest in future Ukrainian energy projects and ambiguous threats of consequences won’t change that reality. Time and again we have seen this administration’s approach to Russia sound tough, but in reality be incredibly weak. When President Biden treats our strategic partner Ukraine with such disdain, he is sending a dangerous message to our friends and adversaries alike. I urge my colleagues to join me in rejecting this deal and reaffirming our unwavering support for Ukraine.”
