Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement following multiple comments made by NBC journalists during the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics that downplayed the horrific genocide and human rights abuses committed by the Chinese Communist Party; described the ongoing genocide that the current U.S. Congress, the former Republican administration and the current Democrat administration have all said is occurring as “alleged” or simply a human rights “transgression”; and repeated the CCP’s propaganda that they have “plenty of support” in thinking themselves “a champion of the developing world.”

“Our committee had a long conversation with NBC News prior to the start of these games where we expressed our grave concern that by airing the 2022 Beijing Olympics, they would allow the CCP to spread their lies and propaganda. And they assured us at the time that they would make sure this grave issue was handled properly. Instead – and as we feared – NBC journalists made multiple comments during the opening ceremonies that in essence whitewashed the CCP’s genocide and their crimes against their own people.

“Let me be clear. The CCP is committing genocide. This is not ‘alleged’ – it is a fact. And the state-sponsored extinction of an entire culture through enslavement, imprisonment, torture, terror, rape and murder is not a ‘transgression.’ It is a genocide. Any efforts by NBC journalists to soften the brutal nature of the CCP’s oppression and atrocities only makes them puppets of the CCP.”
