McCaul Blasts Secretary Raimondo’s “Dangerous” and “Reckless” Comments Dismissing the CCP’s Military Threat

Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement in response to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo dismissing the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) military in a recent interview with Bloomberg. In contrast to Secretary Raimondo’s comments, top national security advisers in the Biden administration have repeatedly identified the threat posed by the CCP. 

“Secretary Raimondo’s response that strong export controls are reserved only for countries that launch ground invasions is misguided and demonstrates the Department of Commerce’s insufficient focus on its national security mission. The U.S. cannot repeat the mistake of waiting until after an invasion to hit Russia’s military with these strong measures. There is no reasonable argument that U.S. technology should be contributing to these war machines—especially when Xi has told the world he would use force to take over Taiwan and has provided tacit support for Putin’s further invasion of Ukraine.  This is one of many recent comments by the secretary that really call into question whether the critical export control issues that are currently under the Commerce Department should remain there.”
