Washington D.C.—Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY), the Committee’s Chairman, today released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s response to Russia’s chemical weapons attack in the United Kingdom:

“We’re encouraged that the President has issued an Executive Order to lay the groundwork for a possible second round of sanctions against Russia for the chemical weapons attack in the United Kingdom against former Russian agent Sergei Skripal. Existing law demanded this action. The first round of sanctions largely imposed penalties that the United States already had in place. The second round of sanctions should be fully implemented, in coordination with our allies to maximize impact. We look forward to seeing which options the President chooses to pursue, as Russia must feel that the punishments for its actions carry real, painful costs.”
