McCaul, Meeks, Smith and Bass Issue Statement on One Year Anniversary of Crisis in Northern Ethiopia

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul and Chairman Gregory W. Meeks, and Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights, Ranking Member Chris Smith and Chair Karen Bass, issued the following statement regarding the one-year anniversary of the ongoing crisis in Northern Ethiopia:

“One year into this devastating civil war in Northern Ethiopia, we reiterate our urgent call to all parties, particularly the Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), to end the senseless violence immediately and start the negotiation process in good faith. We condemn the TPLF’s continued advance towards Addis Ababa and the Government of Ethiopia’s intensified strikes in Northern Ethiopia. Again, we urge all parties to allow humanitarian aid, including fuel and medical supplies, to flow unimpeded into Tigray and other parts of the north, where over seven million people need immediate lifesaving assistance.

“The people of Ethiopia continue to suffer through this civil war, as evidenced by the continued mass killings, widespread sexual and gender-based violence, and other gross violations of human rights reported by the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, and other credible organizations. The intransigence demonstrated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, General Tsadkan Gebretensae of the TPLF, and all parties to this war must come to an end now before it collapses the Ethiopian state. Congress will continue to work with this administration and ensure all appropriate measures are brought to bear for a peaceful and immediate end to this crisis.”
