Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement on President Biden’s confirmation that ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was confirmed dead after a United States special operations mission in Northwest Syria.

“This morning, President Biden announced that the leader of ISIS, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, has been confirmed dead after a US special operations mission in Northwest Syria. I applaud the brave men and women of the United States military and intelligence community who contributed to this successful operation.

“The recent uptick in ISIS attacks, including the January prison break in Hasakah and attack on an army barracks in Iraq, is disturbing. We need to work with our coalition partners to maintain significant counterterrorism pressure to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS and safety of our homeland. That is why it is imperative that we keep a residual force in Syria to continue to fight the threat of ISIS.”
