Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Abbey Gate suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport that killed 13 U.S. servicemembers, at least 170 Afghans, and wounded 45 U.S. servicemembers.

“President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan ignored the warnings of his top generals, our allies, and the intelligence community. He was determined to unconditionally withdraw come hell or highwater, no matter the consequences. As a result, today we remember, honor, and continue to mourn the 13 brave U.S. servicemembers who lost their lives serving our country. It didn’t have to be this way. Americans deserve answers, and I will not stop until a thorough investigation has been conducted.”

Earlier this month, Rep. McCaul released an interim report on his investigation into President Biden’s decision to unconditionally withdraw from Afghanistan, the administration’s failure to plan for the fallout from this withdrawal, and the chaotic and deadly emergency evacuation that resulted.
