Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement in response to the Biden administration’s changes to the U.S.’s Venezuela policy.

“While the illegitimate Maduro regime continues its violent repression of the Venezuelan people and the illegal and arbitrary detention of eight Americans, the Biden administration has decided to capitulate by providing their insiders with economic relief. Economic pressure is one of the only ways to compel the regime to act in good faith. Unilaterally waving that pressure will not only incentivize the regime to continue its illegality, but it will also finance their corrupt actions. And to make it worse, the administration is pursuing this policy based on a failed negotiation process facilitated by Russia. Through the actions announced today, the United States is empowering the Maduro dictatorship and weakening our ability to bring home American hostages detained in Venezuela.”
