Washington, D.C. – Today, The Washington Post published an article about a report written by the Defense Department outlining some of the many mistakes made by President Biden and his top advisors at the State Department and the National Security Council (NSC) regarding the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The report – only obtained by the news outlet through a FOIA request – details how the administration refused to accept the situation on the ground, tied the Defense Department’s hands and placed “American troops ordered to carry out the withdrawal in greater danger.”

“Today’s scathing report from The Washington Post is yet another stark reminder of how congressional Democrats have completely abdicated their constitutionally mandated oversight authority and have utterly failed to hold the Biden administration accountable for their chaotic and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan,” stated Rep. McCaul. “It’s absolutely shameful. The American people should be able to rely on Congress to conduct vigorous oversight when the Executive Branch puts American lives in harm’s way, including by abandoning hundreds of American citizens behind enemy lines in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.”

Rep. McCaul introduced a Resolution of Inquiry (ROI) more than four months ago to compel the Biden administration to provide Congress with documents and information related to their decision to withdraw and the actions during and after the non-combatant evacuation order (NEO). House Democrats secretly turned off the minority’s ability to use ROIs to conduct oversight, and have refused to reinstate it. To date, the Biden administration has not provided any documents requested or responded to numerous letters sent by Rep. McCaul seeking answers to critical questions regarding the withdrawal.
