Washington, DC – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement after China’s National People’s Congress, a non-democratic body controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), approved a plan to tighten control over Hong Kong’s electoral system. While the CCP claims the plan aims to “improve” Hong Kong’s governance by ensuring only “patriots” loyal to the CCP can wield power, in reality it will all but eliminate the last shreds of democracy in Hong Kong.

“Today the Chinese Communist Party’s puppet legislature destroyed the legitimacy of future elections in Hong Kong. Even after imposing their dystopian ‘National Security Law’ to criminalize dissent, the CCP knows their authoritarianism will continue to be rejected by voters in Hong Kong. When they meet next week, I strongly urge Secretary Blinken and NSA Sullivan to remind their CCP counterparts they will not get away with crushing Hong Kong’s freedom and democracy. The United States will continue to stand with the people of Hong Kong, as we do with those fighting for freedom everywhere.”
